HONOLULU — The University of Hawai‘i women’s soccer team opens the 2008 season at 7 p.m. today as the Rainbow Wahine face two tough opponents to start, beginning Wednesday with Long Beach State at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Following Long Beach State, Hawai‘i will then host Denver at 4 p.m. on Monday. Denver won the Sun Belt Conference last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Long Beach State won the Big West Conference regular season, but narrowly missed on making it to the NCAA Tournament.
Both teams return a large core of the squad this season, which should make for two tough games right from the start. Hawai‘i returns two Kaua‘i players — midfielders Mari Punzal and Emma Makepa-Foley.
The Wahine also welcome Kaua‘i High School graduate Tiffany Ikeda-Simao to the team as a walk-on.
Today’s opener also marks the first tournament game of the non-conference season for the Rainbow Wahine. The OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi will all be at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
