The Westside Falcon Boys Under 12 team won its double-header to kick off the fall season of Kaua‘i Soccer Association Sunday.
Playing back-to-back games, the Westside Falcon 12s edged out Hawaiian Heat Girls Under 12, 2-1 before nipping Lokahi, a Girls Under 11 squad, 3-1 in its sweep.
Wailana Borrero, normally the strong softball pitcher for the Red Raider softball team, made her debut as a goalkeeper for the Lokahi Girls Under 18 squad which battled to a 1-1 stalemate against the Westside United Boys Under 15.
“I like to see the boys take the shots,” said Kevin Devitt, KSA commissioner. “This way I can see what she’s made of.”
Borrero was tough in the box, staving off shots from all directions, and got some help from tough defensive play from the lime-shirted Lokahi defenders.
Earlier in the day, the Westside United BU15 dropped a heartbreaker to Team Motiv-8 BU16, 3-2.
Other winners in the fall opener included the Kaua‘i Sparks shutting down the Lightning Chix, 5-0 in a Girls Under 10 matchup.
The Southside Lunachicks were 3-0 over the KSC-Blazing Angels despite a strong challenge exerted by the blue-and-gold Girls Under 10 team, and Pohaku Boys Under 10 shut out the Team Motiv-8 Boys Under 10, 2-0.
The GIFC Boys Under 14 were a 2-0 winner over the Westside Falcon Boys Under 14, and Ha‘aheo Kaua‘i, a Girls Under 14 team, came alive for a 10-0 win over the Hawaiian Heat GU14, coach Bobbie Rapozo freely rotating fresh legs onto the field in an effort to get the pinkshirts to play positions outside their comfort zone.
Games continue Sunday at the North Vidinha soccer fields starting at 11:30 a.m.
The public is invited to view the competition at no charge as KSA hosts 11 games.
