The 73-year-old visitor who died Wednesday morning at Wilcox hospital after snorkeling in front of the Lawa‘i Beach Resort was identified by police Thursday as James Dunkelberger of York, Penn., according to county spokeswoman Mary Daubert.
According to witnesses, the man had been snorkeling at around 9:30 in the morning when he was discovered in distress, Daubert said.
A surfer brought the man to shore after noticing his struggle. Moments later, the man collapsed. A bystander performed CPR on the man until firefighters from the Koloa station arrived and took over. Medics continued CPR on the man en route to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:37 a.m.
Daubert said the man was on a side trip from a Royal Caribbean cruiseship docked at Nawiliwili. He was traveling with his wife at the time.
Daubert said yesterday that the Kaua‘i Police Department had yet to conduct the autopsy because it was waiting for the results of a toxicology report.
