Three-point bombs and solid rebounding from Kayla Werner kept Kaua‘i High School in the game, but the effort came too late as Waimea wrapped up a 44-33 win last night.
The hosting Red Raiders finished the night with six bombs from outside the three-point arc compared with Waimea’s single one launched by Jayme Jacinto in the second quarter.
Kaua‘i opened when Kathleen Cadiente, one half of three pairs of sisters on the court, nailed a trey to give Kaua‘i a 5-0 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Kathleen finshed the game with two treys and her sister Kelsey, getting high point honors in the win, added two second-half treys, her first one getting the crowd to the front of its seat when the petite Kelsey was fouled on the play.
Despite the late start, Waimea got solid play from Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade who finished with 10 points, all coming in the second half.
Jayme Jacinto, coming from an earlier soccer match against Kaua‘i, finished with 8 points, seven coming in the first half.
Despite the late start, Waimea outscored Kaua‘i 8-5 in the opening frame, four points coming from Jacinto.
The Menehune defense kept Kaua‘i to just five third quarter points, three from Kelsey, before going 16-16 in the final frame.
Kira Taylon nailed a trey, her second, at the 2:14 mark to pull Kaua‘i back into the fray, 37-31 only to have Mollie Connelly, another half of a sister pair, answer on a 3-point play to pull Waimea ahead for good.
Connelly finished with 6 points followed by Brandee Victorino with 5 points.
Kathleen Cadiente followed Kelsey with 9 points and Taylan finished with 6 points. Janessa Grady, a half of the third sister pair, ended with 5 points before fouling out with 26 seconds remaining.
