PO‘IPU — Coralyn Murayama and Kristyn Vasconcelles finished the Sunday rodeo tied with 42 points apiece.
That gave Murayama and Vasconcelles shared honors for the All-Around Cowgirl title following the first rodeo of the 2009 season for the Kaua‘i All Girl Rodeo Association.
Murayama, crowned All-Around Cowgirl during the first KAGRA rodeo 10 years ago, and Vasconcelles, the 2008 KAGRA All Around Cowgirl, shared not only top honors following the rodeo, but also brought in the American and Hawaiian flags during the Grand Entry that marked the 10th anniversary for KAGRA.
The tight fight was waged early as Murayama chalked up third place in the 1st D of the 3D Barrels event on a 18.231 go, just .043 second better than Vasconcelles’ go that earned her fourth place.
The pair teamed for third place honors in the Team Roping competition where they finished with an 11.56 on a single go.
The see-saw competition continued in the Breakaway Roping event where Murayama topped the competition on a 15.15 average on two go’s while Vasconcelles settled for runner-up honors with a 16.91 average on two go’s.
Vasconcelles turned the tables in the Steer Undecorating event, taking first on a 4.98 average on two go’s while Murayama settled in the runner-up position with a 7.39 average on two go’s.
In the 3D Pole Bending event, Vasconcelles took the lead with a fourth finish in the 1st D on a 22.744 go, edging Murayama to top of the 2nd D on a 24.229 go.
Top honors in the 1st D of Barrels went to Taylor Ludington (17.723) followed by Kelli Carveiro (17.832). Shan Mundon topped the 2nd D on a 19.693 go followed by Michelle Ientile (20.020) and Hoolai Ludington-Braun (20.374).
Joyce Miranda topped the 3rd D on a 20.890 followed by Taylor Ludington (21.040) and Shantel Wong (21.040) who celebrated her birthday the night before.
Miranda teamed with Rhonda Kaui to take top honors in the Team Roping event on a 33.77 average on two go’s followed by Rosanne Shimogawa and Ludington-Braun (41.84/2).
Kim Medeiros topped the Goat Tying with a 22.273 average on two go’s followed by Taylor Ludington (29.419/2) and Carveiro (29.678/2).
Following Murayama and Vasconcelles in the Breakaway Roping, Shan Mundon stopped the clocks with a 16.99 average on two go’s followed by Cheree Rapozo-Vasconcelles (6.72/1) and Kaui (6.86/1).
Following Vasconcelles and Murayama in the Steer Undecorating event, Kaui stopped the clocks on a 7.61 average on two go’s followed by Medeiros (16.73/2) and Laureen Naumu-Balocan (5.18/1).
Ludington topped the 1st D of 3D Pole Bending with a 21.762 go followed by Wendy Tannery (22.149) and Britni Ludington-Braun (22.283).
Following Murayama in the 2nd D, Miranda enjyed a 24.241 go followed by Medeiros (25.008), Mundon (25.470) and Janine Hashitate (25.650).
Ientile topped the 3rd D on a 25.939 go followed by Nancy McMahon (26.781), (27.003) and Tierra Rapozo (28.440).
