KAPA‘A — Mai’lika Napoleon led the Lady Warriors with 15 points despite not playing in the fourth quarter, and Kapa‘a crushed Kaua‘i 60-30 last night in its home-opener at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Napoleon had already reached double digits in the first half thanks in part to three of her 3-pointers and finished the night with five rebounds. Tori Tuttle followed that performance up with nine points, seven rebounds and a block. Kira Nakamura added six points, all coming from the free throw line where shot a perfect 100 percent. Jondi Das also had five rebounds.
Kapa‘a held Kaua‘i to the single digits in the first half, going into the break with a 26-9 lead.
Kaua‘i’s biggest problem was its turnovers. Kaua‘i had the ball stolen away from them eight times in the first half and 10 more times in the second.
Kaua‘i’s Jori Jasper led all Raider scorers with eight points — seven of which all came in the fourth quarter. Nearly half of Kaua‘i’s 30 points all came from the free throw line. Kaua‘i got only 18 points from the field and no 3-pointers.
Kaua‘i’s Kelsey Cadiente took quite the beating yesterday, ending up on the ground for many plays she was involved in. Still, she finished with seven points and two rebounds. Older sister and co-captain Kathleen also added seven points.
Kaua‘i’s Kayler Werner, a transfer from Waimea, left late in the game with an injury but finished with six rebounds.
Junior Varsity: Kapa‘a 49, Kaua‘i 18
In the earlier junior varsity game, the young Lady Warriors got their second straight, beating Kaua‘i 49-18.
Kapa‘a’s Mahea Hanie-Grace led the team with 21 points, followed by Reggie McCabe with 13 points.
Kapa‘a led 25-7 heading into the half and picked up right where the Lady Warriors left off. They went on to score 15 unanswered points in the third quarter. Kaua‘i, still stuck at seven points, didn’t get another set of points until Jasmine Mariano was sent to the line to shoot two. All of her seven points came from the free throw line in the fourth quarter — Mariano was 7-for-8. The Raiders would end up scoring more points in the fourth quarter (13) than they did in the previous three.
Kaua‘i’s Uila Ahosivi finished with eight points. Nearly all of Kapa‘a’s girls finished the night with at least two points.
