Sunday at 1 p.m. is the showdown between the league-leading Hanapepe Rivermen and the Makaweli Indians at Vidinha Stadium.
Hanapepe, a 12-11 winner over Lihu‘e, Sunday at Vidinha Stadium, currently holds a 7-1 record, its only loss coming at the hands of Makaweli.
With just two weeks remaining, Makaweli suffered its second season loss at the hands Kalaheo, 10-6 in a single game at Hanapepe Stadium.
That loss gives Makaweli a 6-2 record heading into Sunday with just two weeks remaining in the Americans of Japanese Ancestry baseball league.
Waimea forfeited its match to Kapa‘a at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kalaheo came up with four runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh frames to ice the victory.
Kaina McCallum belted a solo homerun in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 deadlock to set the stage for Kalaheo’s sixth and seventh frames.
Kaina (2-4) led the Kalaheo bats with a double and his HR with two RBI. Kainoa Santos (2-5) finished with three RBI, Troy Kaneshiro (2-5) marked a pair of RBI. Keola McCallum (2-6, dbl), Jason Koga (1-3) and Denny Miyasato (0-3) each had an RBI.
Dave Bukoski (2-3, dbl), Branden Ishibashi (2-4) and Zoomie Bukoski (2-4) also added hits as Kalaheo tallied 15 hits on its 10 runs.
Makaweli got two RBI from Sean Jardin (2-5) and one each from Leighton Otoman (0-4), Mike Shimatsu (1-5), Brad Chiba (1-3) and Kainoa Pezario’s (1-4) double.
Lihu‘e was able to push two runs across with one out in the ninth, but the effort fell short to Hanapepe who opened with five runs on fledgling pitcher Tyfen Texeira.
The ninth grader was called to duty when Mikey Cardinez had other affairs to tend to.
With no outs and the bases loaded, Tyfen got help from catcher Derrick Lacaden to tag two out at the plate.
But Troy Yamase tagged onto a two-RBI single to left, crossing Vince Nitta, getting first on a hit-by-pitch, and Kevin Suga, getting first on a fielder’s choice. Brock Santiago and Dean Nonaka followed with RBI shots for the five runs.
Lihu‘e came back with five runs in the sixth inning, including Tyfen, getting first after his dad Bobby was clonked as a pinch-hitter, scoring the tying run on a Shane Sadamitsu play.
Suga, nailing two doubles and a single, marked an RBI to lead the Hanapepe bats. Quentin Natividad doubled and had two singles for an RBI. Troy Yamase (1-3) had three RBI along with Santiago (2-4). Dean Nonaka (1-3) marked one RBI. Scott Yamase (2-3) and Nitta (1-5) also hit for Hanapepe.
Curtis Matsumura, going in to finish for Tyfen, finished with an RBI on a single along with Darran Sakai (1-4), Tyfin (0-3), Micah Hee (0-4) and Shane Sadamitsu (0-5). Lacaden finished with a single.
