LIHU‘E — Waimea hurdler Jayme Jacinto won both the Girls 110 Meter Hurdles and the 300 Meter Hurdles event, and qualified for auto state times in both events, Friday.
Jacinto earned the dual entries with her first finish in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles of 16.61, comfortably below the auto standard of 17.24, and the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles, where she overtook Brianne Pignoli on the top end to stop the clock at 50.05, bettering the auto standard of 50.14.
Plagued by the flu bug, the Menehune wahine was missing the services of long distance runner Caralyn Broyles. Although present, Natasha Abadilla, who won the 800 Meter last week over Broyles, was also limited to timing due to illness.
But the bug didn’t stop Charleen Miguel, who finished first in the Girls 200 Meter and 400 Meter dashes. In the 200 Meter event, Miguel stopped the clock at 27.86, just .02 second short of the state auto standard of 27.84. However, she left the stadium with a consideration time in the event — the threshold is 29.24.
Waimea girls finished second in points with 88 to the Kaua‘i High School girls, who piled up 101 points. Kapa‘a followed with 75 points and Island School women rounded out the field with seven points.
In the overall win, Kaua‘i’s Kelsey Cadiente qualified for the state meet in the 100 Meter Dash on a 13.33 run just .06 second faster than fellow runner Jessica Iwata (13.39). Cadiente squeezed into states by the narrowest of margins — her time was .01 seconds better than the auto standard of 13.34.
Kaua‘i’s 4×100 Relay team also earned a state qualifying time with its first finish of 51.57, bettering the auto standard of 53.54 by almost two seconds.
Kapa‘a High School boys took overall first place points with 125, followed by Waimea High School with 89 points. Kaua‘i boys finished with 71 points and Island School left with 20 points.
None of the boys qualified for auto times, but several came close as Canaan Bernard of Kaua‘i topped a 22-runner field in the Boys 100 Meter Dash, stopping the clock at 11.39, earning a consideration time, but falling just short of the auto standard of 11.34.
Caleb Sarsona of Kapa‘a, finishing second, earned a consideration time of 13.54. He continued on to make another consideration time in the 200 Meter Run on his 24.03 performance, just 01 second better than the consideration standard of 24.04.
Nelson Acosta of Waimea finished the 110 Meter Hurdles at 16.77, falling short of the consideration standard of 16.54, and the Waimea Boys 4×400 relay team finished first at 3:52.34, missing the consideration standard of 3:43.24.
Joseph Velasco of Kapa‘a topped the 300 Meter Hurdles on a 44.91 run, falling short of the consideration standard of 44.04.
