The talk of Waimea town was the Kapa‘a upset, Saturday when the Warriors took a 2-1 edge over Kaua‘i in a double-header at Ron Martin Field.
Kaua‘i came back to take Game 2, 17-5, but are now in a tie with Waimea at 2-1, the Menehune taking its first loss in a 20-17 heartbreaker that went beyond the three-hour mark.
On Saturday, Game 1 went just a little more than 90 minutes with Kaua‘i’s Taren Tani throwing a game-winning performance, but suffering the loss after Tanner Shigeta blasted a two-run homerun in the second inning.
In the loss, Tani went six innings allowing one earned run on just three hits, striking out six batters and walking none.
Brendan Kamibayashi picked up the Game 1 win for Kapa‘a in seven innings with just one run allowed on three hits with one strikeout and four walks.
Kaua‘i answered in the sixth inning with a run by Jamen Albarado on a fielder’s choice, but the effort fell short.
According to a spectator who was at the game, Kaua‘i had its chances but succumbed to base running, three runners getting nailed for failing to tag up on fly balls.
The Raiders regrouped and charged back in Game 2 with 17 runs on 14 hits to Kapa‘a’s five runs on eight hits.
Dustin Prem led Kaua‘i bats, finishing 2-3, scoring twice and getting two RBIs. Kaylan Wakumoto was 2-3 with a single and a double and scored twice.
Firstbaseman Jordan Leanio answered a Kapa‘a homerun with one of his own in the second inning. He finished 2-2 and left the game after being injured following his second base hit.
Steven Perreira was 1-1 with a 3-RBI double and Tani finished 2-2 with an RBI.
Kapa‘a (1-3) next hosts Waimea (2-1) on Wednesday in a single seven-inning game starting at 3:30 p.m.
