Pili Chung finished with a game-high nine points to lead the Kamikaze-White to a 21-12 showing over the efforts of the Kaulupono Girls Thursday night in Kalaheo.
She combined with Kristle Henry adding seven points in the win while balanced scoring from Jullyn Ramos, Nicole Palacio, Casey Anacleto and Carolyne Gacusan, each netting a pair, headlined the Kaulupono effort at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
“We kept up with them for most of the night,” said Bobby Kamakele, one of the Kaulupono coaches.
“But in the end, we couldn’t stop their leaders. At least the girls know they can play with the big girls.”
The second Thursday night contest in the county’s 13 and Under program saw Annie Ballesteros finish with a dozen points to lead the Kamikaze-Red to a 27-11 win over the Z-Girlz who got four points from Maile Tuttle whose big sister Tori plays for the Kapa‘a High School team that finished fourth at the state competition Friday. Maile was joined by Shayna Sa netting three points.
On Saturday, Anacleto paced the Kaulupono 34-16 showing over the Kamikaze-Red in a single girls game at Kaua‘i High School gym.
Ballesteros finished with seven points to lead the Kamikaze-Red effort.
A trio of boys’ games preceded the single girls match with Vaughn Thompson coming up with a game-high 19 points and Javan Torres adding 11 points in Papalina’s 48-16 showing over Team Central who got five points from Kaimana Cummings and four points from Lansen Eto.
A.J. Martinez finished with 14 points to lead Westside to a 36-27 edge over Lihu‘e who got 10 points from Chanse Ramirez.
Vhincel Bolleser joined Martinez with nine points in the Westside win.
Myron and Austin Manera finished with six and five points, respectively to aid Ramirez’s lead for Lihu‘e.
James Paik finished with a game-high 19 points and Kawika Wellington added seven points to keep Hanakila undefeated with its 65-31 win over the G Unit that was led by Una Masaniai coming up with 10 points. Edsel Lactaotao and Makana Aki each finished with six points in the effort.
With the the county’s 13 and Under program ending on March 14 with a trio of girls’ games, the Department of Parks and Recreation announces the start up of the 10 and 11 and Under program with an organizational meeting of interested coaches and individuals scheduled for Tuesday night at the old section of the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center starting at 6:30 p.m.
Registration for the 10 and 11 Under program takes place from March 9-12.
Tonight, the 13 and Under boys take to the floor of the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with three games on tap starting at 6 p.m.
The ever-improving Westside will match up with the Ho‘ouila goldshirts starting at 6 p.m. followed by the G Unit tangling with Team Central at 7 p.m. Hanakila will match up with Lihu‘e in the third game starting at 8 p.m.
