Multiple Sclerosis Walk

Multiple Sclerosis means that you may not be able to walk when you wake up or you may suddenly have impaired vision or your memory fails you for no apparent reason.  Teams work hard every year fundraising by selling candy, cookbooks or asking for donations. All monies collected are presented to the MS society on the day of the walk. There is no cure for multiple sclerosis, and with diagnosis occurring most frequently between the ages of 20 and 50, many individuals face a lifetime filled with unpredictability. Funds collected will support research for a cure and provide programs. Come walk for those who sometimes can’t. Kalaheo Elementary School cafeteria

Kalaheo Elementary School presents Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world famous candy man and his quest to find an heir. The story is a stage adaptation of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” which features the songs from the classic family film, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” The score features “The Candy Man,” “Pure Imagination,” “Oompa Loompa” and ”I Want it Now” by Academy and Grammy award winners Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley. The new script was adapted by Leslie Bricusse and Timothy McDonald. 

“Wonka Jr.” is directed by Marly Madayag. Tickets available at the school or at the door prior to the show; $5 for adults, children 12 and under, free.

NY Times best-selling author Stella Cameron will present a talk on publishing and sign copies of her latest book in her popular Bayou series “Cypress Nights.”

Hanalei School

The Kaua‘i North Shore Lions Club’s annual pancakes breakfast includes hula and entertainment, lucky drawings and a silent auction. Tickets on sale noon to 6 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Princeville Foodland or contact Caelica Covel, 639-1967. This is the major fund raiser for North Shore Lions Club and proceeds are used for free vision and hearing testing for seniors and students; and scholarships for North Shore students. Tickets are $7.

There will be song and dance with John Kaneholani and the Hanalei Elementary Ukulele band under the sponsorship of the Stephen Stills Children’s Music Project. Acknowledgments will be made recognizing the service of Lani Kawahara, head librarian Jennifer Relacion and past presidents of the Friends of the North Shore Library’s Board of Directors. There will also be a performance by Naomi Yokotake’s Hula Halau O‘Hanalei, as well as birthday cake and refreshments.

Kaua‘i Community College students ‘Earth Week hike’ to the jewel of Koke‘e Canyon to Black Pipe Loop. A wonder-filled forest and ridge hike crossing Koke‘e Stream to spectacular views of Waimea Canyon, Waipoo Falls and Kumuwela Lookout. Registered KCC students only. Strenuous 6-mile loop. Public hike of Maha‘ulepu coastal walk in honor of Earth Week. Spectacular trail with stunning views each step of the way. This magnificent coastline is unique with its craggy rock limestone formations. Car shuttle for a moderate 5-mile one-way hike from Shipwreck Beach to Maha‘uelpu. Call Allan Rachap, 742-1001.

Calvary Chapel Kaua‘i

U-Turn for Christ Kaua‘i, the only overnight drug and alcohol rehabilitation program on the island, is hosting a benefit featuring fine food, entertainment and a silent auction. All proceeds go to the ministry. There will be an hour of appetizers, followed by a gourmet four-course dinner prepared by Kaua‘i Cuisine. The evening’s Master of Ceremonies will be Council Member Dickie Chang. Local entertainment includes Shilo Pa, Paul Togioka, Jonah Cummings, D’lissa Iannucci, Malani Biley and Michael Ruff. This study session with Joyce Nishimura is on the experiences of Japanese Americans during their World War II internment. This is the story of not only the evacuation but the support received from the local newspaper editor and their community which shaped their return and successful lives afterwards. Friends of The Children’s Justice Center 3rd annual fundraiser features heavy pupu, live entertainment, silent auction and no host bar. Tax deductible contribution goes toward helping the keiki of Kaua‘i who have been sexually abused or witnesses of abuse. Tickets $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Celebrate Reading is a conversation-based program where all community members are invited to read books by visiting artists and attend reading performances and two break-out sessions where readers can talk with the authors. Visiting authors are Witi Ihimaera (“The Whale Rider”); Kiana Davenport (Shark dialogues); Christopher Moore (“Lamb”); Kaui Hart Hemmings (“House of Thieves”); Markus Zusak (“The Book Thief”); Patricia Wood (“Lottery”) and slam poet Kealoha.The festival is open to the public and free of admission.
