LIHU‘E — As part of its goal to establish multiple “remote broadcast” sites around Kaua‘i, KKCR Kaua‘i Community Radio has worked together with the Hawaiian Studies group of Kaua‘i Community College to establish a broadcast facility on the KCC campus. The first broadcast from this new facility will take place live from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday.
“As Kaua‘i’s community radio station, we are proud to be working hand-in-hand with the Hawaiian Studies group at KCC to establish our second remote broadcast location on Kauai,” said Jerry Brocklehurst, General Manger. “As our listeners and members know, we have a long-term goal to help individuals and non-profits from around Kauai gain access to the airwaves by establishing multiple broadcast sites throughout the island. Last year, we originated our first remote broadcast from Ke Kula Ni’ihau O Kekaha on the Westside and we are excited that our second location will be right on the KCC campus. There is perfect alignment between KCC’s educational and community service goals and KKCR’s mission to stimulate, educate and entertain our audience, to preserve, perpetuate and celebrate Hawaiian culture, and to reflect the diversity of the local and world community.”
Initially, the radio program will be broadcast monthly from noon to 1 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. The content of each show will carry a theme and be broadcast in Hawaiian. It will include the history of music, a variety of campus news, local news, discussion topics, and music to be determined by the KCC students and faculty. Over time, the plan is to expand to a weekly show as more students from all disciplines become involved. Monday’s live broadcast will feature all Kaua‘i songs.
“This is an exciting event that was initiated by Joshua Fukino and Pua Rossi of KCC’s Hawaiian Studies program, who were looking at an avenue for Hawaiian Language students to utilize their language skills within the community. It is also a way to get more Hawaiian music and language out into the community, ” said Dennis Chun, Director of Hawaiian Studies at KCC.
“With the wealth of musical talent and expertise we have amongst our faculty and students, featuring college radio at KCC has been our dream for many years. Radio is the perfect venue where our students can learn about the history of creative artistic musical expression; the world of diversity in music and culture; the essential art of effective communication; sound business management; and accurate delivery of current news and information to an audience of listeners. We are so delighted to be serving as a broadcast site for KKCR. Additionally, KCC will have the proud distinction of being one of two community radio stations in the UH ten-campus system.” said Dr. Helen Cox, KCC Chancellor.
