KILAUEA — Thanks to alert neighbors, the residents of a Ho‘okui Street home in Kilauea escaped unharmed Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in a work shed that was partially attached to their home.
The American Red Cross Kaua‘i Office is providing assistance to the three residents as their home sustained substantial damage and is currently uninhabitable, a county news release states.
The structure fire began at around 6:25 a.m. and spread to the back half of the home including a bedroom, bathroom, living-dining room and kitchen.
Firefighters from the Hanalei and Kapa‘a stations responded to the fire, along with rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e station.
The fire was deemed under control at around 7:20 a.m. and fully extinguished at 9:30 a.m.
At around 11:05 a.m., a small fire, likely due to embers that flew across the stream from the Kilauea home, broke out at the base of an Ironwood tree.
This fire was extinguished within minutes as firefighters were still at the scene mopping up the first fire, the release says.
According to a preliminary report, damages to the older wooden home and its contents are estimated to be $250,000.
The cause of the fire has been classified as undetermined.
