LIHU‘E — It was a banner year for the Kapa‘a Warriors on the hardwood, a fact reflected in the selections for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation 2009-10 Basketball All-Star Teams, released Monday.
Kapa‘a came away with both the boys and girls KIF crowns, each also making it to the semifinals of the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championship tournaments.
The boys All-Star team consists of Kapa‘a senior Stephen Greenleaf, who took his scoring to a new level at states, and Kaua‘i High School senior Davone Florence, the Raiders’ floor general and leading scorer, at the guard spots.
The Warriors owned the frontcourt with sophomore forward Duke Pauli, junior forward Spam Lindsey and senior center Sean Shigematsu all getting honored for strong seasons.
Waimea High School’s VJ Carineo was named an All-Star at the utility spot, playing a versatile inside-outside role for the Menehune.
Pauli earned Player of the Year honors after a season in which he was the Warriors’ leading scorer and rebounder.
Kapa‘a head coach Philip Baclayon was named Coach of the Year, leading his team to a 13-3 record and third place in the Div. II championship tournament.
On the girls’ side, Waimea’s Jayme Jacinto earned Player of the Year honors as the Menehune’s top three-point threat. The senior guard, along with Kaua‘i freshman and top scorer Kristle Henry, made up the two All-Star guard slots.
Waimea senior forward Erin Connelly’s dominant inside presence and Kapa‘a senior Leina‘ala McCabe’s all-court game earned each of them All-Star nods in the frontcourt.
Warrior senior center Tori Tuttle, who prowled the paint as a key shot-blocker, and Warrior senior utility player Ash-lyn Lee, the lefty always in the middle of an important run, made it three All-Stars for Kapa‘a.
Coach of the Year Terry Maguire took her team to a fourth-place finish at the HHSAA state tournament and a 10-3 season record.
