PO‘IPU — Reyn Morioka shot a 5-over par 77 to lead the field of boys and Taylor Viquelia carded the day’s best score, a two-over par 74, in the latest round of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf Saturday.
Following a one-week delay due to the cancellation of last week’s matches because of the the tsunami threat, this week’s round was greeted by stiff winds out of the north at Kiahuna Golf Course.
Led by Morioka, the Kaua‘i boys picked up its second straight victory with a team-total 317, just two strokes over its round two weeks ago at Puakea Golf Course.
Kapa‘a boys, paced by Weston Moniz’s 85, finished with a team total 352 for second followed by Waimea at 385, its pace being set by Ka‘imi Miyashiro’s 93.

Waimea, getting play from Quincee Parongao (141) for the first time, ended with a team score of 344.
“It’s windy,” Morioka said after greening the No. 9 on his second shot after getting the best lie of his group.

“We’re getting beat up out there,” Miyashiro said at the No. 9 hole. “I took a nine on back there, and a six before that. It’s really bad.”
With the completion of two rounds, Tokioka leads the field with an average of 77 followed by Morioka at 79.5.
Moniz continued to lead the Warriors with 85 Saturday, followed by Justin Uegawa who struggled with the wind blowing sand back in his face at the left bunker on No. 9, eventually finishing with an 88, a stroke better than Jordan Guerrero’s 89. Kenji Miyata rounded out the Kapa‘a scoring with 90, his second shot at No. 9 sending the ball down the green for an extra chip shot to the green.
Miyashiro topped the Menehune boys with 93 followed by Joshua Matsusaka and Dylan Santos-Balisacan each carding 97. Camden Nakashima finished a stroke back at 98.
While the boys had their ups and downs with the wind, the girls appeared to be calm and collected approaching the turn.
Viquelia, the field leader at 74, had the best lie of her threesome, greening on her second shot and two-putting for par.
Kelli Oride, just a few feet back of Viquelia, greened on her second shot, getting the best lie. But her putt wouldn’t drop, forcing a two-putt for par. Oride finished the round a stroke back of Viquelia at 75.
