Tucked in a little wedge between two buildings, Mermaid Cafe has more than thrived for the last 11 years. The tiny restaurant is always busy with all kinds of people.
Tourists somehow discover this not-so-hidden gem of a restaurant. Locals who have tried it once keep coming back for more, probably because of the fresh fish that Mermaid serves, always locally caught. Hippies love the healthy food, almost entirely supplied by local farmers, with very few exceptions.
But how does the Drink of the Week fit in this casual dining place, planted in the heart of Old Kapa‘a Town? The answer is easy: Hugely.
The “Thai Iced Tea” that Mermaid Cafe serves is reason enough to come back over and over, even you don’t (yeah, right) like the food. You can have it served with evaporated milk or with coconut milk, which, honestly, is by far the best choice if you have a sweet tooth.
The three beauties that work at Mermaid, Joanne Nono, Kendall Clark and Céline Weiss, could also be reason enough to go there. The three troublemakers are good friends, and always hang out together. Just don’t tell anyone about the parking lot pau hana time, OK?
Mermaid Cafe is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. There’s a different yummy special every day, but the “Thai Iced Tea” is always there, thankfully.
