LAWA‘I — Jodi Ascuena found a fertility god from Indonesia and Kane Turalde had some unique kulolo for sale, Sunday.
Ascuena, celebrating her graduation from the Kaua‘i Community College, discovered not only the unique wood carving, but also scored on a rolling pin which she said is for Carol Yotsuda of the Garden Island Arts Council to “roll out some of the GIAC ideas.”
Turalde — a coach with the Kilohana Canoe Club, beneficiary of Sunday’s sale by the Lawa‘i Cannery Row Self Storage and Warehouse — said the kulolo was made especially for the garage sale and samples were limited, although he was liberal in dispensing the delicacy created out of coconut.
“It’s a real bargain,” one shopper said. “They sell it real expensive in the stores — a small piece is more than what he’s selling the big block for.”
Lorna Santos of Lawa‘i Cannery said 37 vendors took part in the garage sale helping the Kilohana Canoe Club.
Vendors’ fees go toward the beneficiary non-profit organization who also provides food and refreshments for shoppers to enjoy, the profits benefiting the organization.
Once the sale is over, many of the vendors opt to leave the unsold items to be donated to the Restore thrift shop run by Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity.
Santos said she is currently accepting applications from vendors for the July 17 garage sale which will benefit the Kaua‘i Special Olympics program under Jocelyn Barriga.
Shopping was brisk throughout the morning, the first hour being traditionally the busiest as shoppers scour the aisles in search of special buys.
“It was real busy,” Santos said. “The first hour was crazy. It’s only now we have a chance to catch our breath.”
Among the items she sold were a gas clothes dryer which would be picked up after the sale closed.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have several of our regular vendors,” Santos said. “Stel Pimental had another commitment and Charmaine Simao is in Washington state, but I’m sure they’ll be back for the next one.”
Arthur Brun, who already found success with his smoked meat, sausages and sunglasses at the Grove Farm Swap Meet, was able to take a break for lunch, enjoying the chicken offering from Kilohana Canoe Club.
“It’s not that busy since there are a lot of people from Kalaheo westward who are having garage sales,” he said. “But it’s still good.”
Leah Scovel, returning from a special Mother’s Day trip to Oregon, was already contemplating how to ship a patele plate lunch to her son who is attending college in Oregon. During the Thanksgiving weekend, Scovel had arranged to ship Thanksgiving dinner to her son.
“See this?” she said, pointing to a ticket. “Where there’s a will, we can figure it out.”
