Richard Kiyabu
Richard M. Kiyabu of Mesquite, Nev., died on June 20, 2011, at home, peacefully in his sleep at the age of 76. He was born on Feb. 24, 1935, in Hilo to Morihiko Kiyabu and Fujiko Kiyabu (Tokeshi).
He was raised in Hawai‘i and joined the U.S. Army on Feb. 24, 1954. He embarked on a proud and distinguished military career that spanned 20 years and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded many meritorious commendations and citations, including the Army commendation medal. He served in military intelligence as a linguist, in the 8th Infantry as a paratrooper, green beret and as a company commander retiring at the rank of major.
He graduated from Waipahu High School and finished in the top 10 percent of his class in management in the Department of Defense (National Security Management) as an honor student at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Mitsu and daughters, Debi Lyon and Grace Chouinard; and is survived by his daughters, Kathy Kiyabu-Bagozzi of Murrieta, Calif.; Patty Glenn and Leilani Glasheen of San Diego, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, George and Calvin; sisters, Doris and Grace, Sue of Hawai‘i; many cousins, nieces, nephews and so very many friends.
He was an active member of the Elks. A memorial service will be held at the Mesquite Elk’s Lodge #2811 (his home away from home) on Saturday, July 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Priscilla Garcia
Priscilla Jane Garcia of ‘Oma‘o died peacefully June 24, 2011, at home at age 69. Born on May 17, 1942 in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, she was a proprietor of Harvey’s Flooring.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret Nunes, and sister, Donna Gonsalves.
She is survived by her husband, Harvey Garcia; sons, Nelson (Margaret) Garcia, Leroy Garcia, Russell (Cynthia) Garcia; hanai daughter, Yasha Garcia; sisters, Jennifer (Joseph) Daos, Louise (Kenneth) Santos; step-sisters, Gayle (Robert) Kaliko, Linda Olshelfski; step-brother, Roy Olshelfski; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Service will be held on Saturday, July 2, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. and Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary, Koloa.
