Who says you have to sacrifice style for comfort? Whether you are taking your first steps on the tread mill or planning to run the Kaua‘i Marathon, the right athletic wear is essential for you to perform your best.
Finding the right clothing makes you feel confident while pounding the pavement and guarantees maximum comfort and performance. Part of that comes from a new crop of high-tech performance fabrics that are moisture-wicking, anti-microbial and UV-shielding.
We asked sisters Jeni and Jasmine Kaohelauli‘i of Work It Out in Kapa‘a to list their favorite running attire and accessories.
1. An ultra-lightweight cap is a must. It helps you keep a cool head and cut down on the glare. This mesh running cap by Brooks runs $18.99 to $24.99.
2. Barefoot running shoes. It may be the newest craze in running, but these Vibram FiverFingers shoes offers a natural way to run. Fans of the shoe says it helps strengthen muscles in the feet and lower legs, improves range of motion and posture. Retails $79 to $105.
3. Accessories. This line of Amphipod race gear is a best seller during the Kaua‘i Marathon, according to Jeni. Why? It’s an easy way to carry your iPod, smart phone and keys while staying bounce free. A fully customizable hydration belt allows you to carry multiple bottles of water. “If you are going on a longer run, and it’s hot out, you definitely need the water to stay hydrated,” said Jasmine. Accessories retail from $18.99 to $50.
4. Socks. “People underestimate the power of the sock,” Jasmine told me. A thin, lightweight sock is a must when running. Look for a moisture wicking, mesh, double-layered sock, which prevents blistering and provides maximum comfort. Retails from $9.99 to $12.99.
5. If running barefoot isn’t your style, Jeni recommends a high-quality running shoe. “It’s the most essential item,” Jeni said. She suggests Brooks or Asics shoes, which have a life of 500 to 600 miles. Work It Out participates in a county recycling program to save you money: Bring in your old running shoes and receive $10 off your purchase of new shoes. Average retail of $105.
6. Energy gels. OK, so this isn’t technically a fashion trend, but energy gels allow runners to fuel up before or during a high-intensity workout. This energy gel by LAVA is locally made and retails $1.59 each.
7. A good sports bra. Investing in the right sports bra is essential, the sisters said. “It’s the second most important thing for women runners,” Jeni said. Jeni suggests this sports bra by Moving Comfort because it’s true to size, comfortable and supportive. Retails for $46.99.
Sign up for the Kaua‘i Marathon in the month of Aug. and receive a free training shirt (retails at $25). While supplies last.
