Coffee
I’m originally from Brazil, the land of samba, soccer and coffee. The pan on the campfire is holding boiling water for the instant coffee — argh, I know — on a camping trip to a remote valley accessible only by boat on Molokai, years ago. If you think instant coffee is bad, imagine the green water we used for it.

Lup Chong Manapua
Lup Chong Manapua is a perfect example of the melting pot that is Hawai‘i’s unique cuisine. Something Chinese — hum bao — is Hawaiianized with a new name and a different take on the fillings: manapua. Then it’s re-Chineseified with a sausage you wouldn’t find outside of Chinatown anywhere else in the U.S. All that, and it’s not a hot dog.

Kalihiwai
As the seasons change, so does my opinion of what Kaua‘i beach is my favorite. Each summer, I fall in love with Kalihiwai Beach. Its white, powdery sand and calm waters makes it ideal for swimming or boogie boarding, and a grove of ironwood trees offer a shady spot to picnic. My absolute favorite part of this North Shore playground is the river that flows into the bay. Kayak up the river to discover an untouched rain forest. It’s about two miles round-trip and is perfect for beginners.

Baiyu
I love life’s little surprises that suddenly lift your spirits so much that you didn’t realize it needed lifting! For instance, just last week, I received an email from Baiyu, the Chinese American R&B singer and actress, regarding her new music video, “Together” that is getting airtime on MTV Networks. She was sending me news for the “Asian American Press.” When I replied that I was now in Kaua‘i, she said, “no way, I’m going to be there performing on August 14!” She is performing Sunday at the “Aloha Kaua‘i for Japan Benefit Concert” at Vidiniha Soccer Field.
So, I feel blessed that my association with the APIA community can lead to a coffee date with a rising star.
