KOLOA — The Kaua‘i Fire Department Prevention Bureau is observing National Fire Prevention Week by promoting fire safety at all elementary schools throughout the island.
This year’s theme is “Protect Your Family from Fire,” a county news release states.
“Our goal is to educate the public about the importance of having a fire escape plan when it comes to fire protection,” said Capt. Daryl Date, head of KFD’s Prevention Bureau. “The students serve as ambassadors for us.”
On Tuesday, members of the Prevention Bureau, along with Smokey Bear and local fire station crews, spoke to the students, faculty and staff of Koloa, Kalaheo and Kilauea elementary schools, and are scheduled to visit the remaining public elementary schools throughout the week, the release states.
In addition, the State Firefighters Safety Guide will be provided to students from kindergarten to 5th grade at all public and private schools on Kaua‘i.
Among the safety tips offered by fire officials are the following:
— Change your smoke alarm batteries once a year.
— Make sure your home fire escape plan is up to date and everyone in your home knows what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Practice your plan often.
— Have fire extinguishers readily available and easily accessible in the event of a fire.
When calling 911 in an emergency, you should provide the operator with the following information:
— The nature of the emergency
— The location of the emergency
— Your name
