LIHU‘E — Following one week of girls’ soccer, the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation opened the boys’ season, Monday when the Kaua‘i High School junior varsity shut down Waimea, 6-0 at Vidinha Stadium.
Eduardo Villarrubia and Jacob Lewis set the pace for the JV Raiders, each player netting two goals against a physical and hard-fighting Menehune defense.
Reggie McFadden opened the books with a left-footed goal near the goal mouth, the ball sailing just past the outstretched Menehune goalkeeper for the opener, six minutes into the game.
Two minutes later, Villarrubia wove through traffic and pulled the trigger at the goal mouth for the second score which stood until the final three minutes of the first half.
Villarrubia netted a goal at the 32nd minute on a free kick for the 3-0 lead at the half.
Lewis opened the second half, capping a second effort on a McFadden shot in the 51st minute. He got another McFadden assist six minutes later, netting a goal on a cross from McFadden for the 5-0 bulge.
With six minutes remaining in the contest, Jared Okayama, moving up from the defender position, nailed the Raiders’ final goal, challenging the Menehune goalkeeper by sending the ball over his shoulder for the final net.
The varsity girls take the field, Wednesday when Kaua‘i hosts Waimea in a 4 p.m. match. At the same time, Island School will be hosting Kapa‘a in an exhibition match.
