Pono Tokioka of the Kaua‘i High School boys team shot a one-under par 71 (35-36), Saturday to lead the Red Raiders to a four-stroke win, 322-326 strokes, over the Kapa‘a High School team Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course.
Playing under clear skies, light winds and nearly perfect conditions, the Red Raider win clinches the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title for the boys team during a make-up game of a previously rained-out event earlier in the season.
With the win, KIF golfers embark on a 36-hole qualifying round Friday and Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. on both days to vie for the open spots for the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships, which will be played on Kaua‘i this year.
The Kaua‘i boys, with the KIF title, will be sending its top five golfers as a team representative with the remaining KIF golfers, including Kaua‘i, to vie for the open individualist spots.
The Kaua‘i girls, the only team in the KIF season, did not post a team score when its No. 1 and 2 golfers, Taylor Viquelia and Daezsa Tomas, did not take the course Saturday.
Kaua‘i will field Viquelia, Tomas, Janae Park and Sabrina Barrier as a team in the girls competition with the five other girls shooting for the open individualist spots.
The David S. Ishii Foundation Girls State Championships will be played May 1 and 2 at the Wailua Golf Course, with the boys state championships being played May 8 and 9, also at Wailua Golf Course.
Tokioka rebounded from a mid-season slump to card the best round of the day, Kenji Miyata, the No. 1 golfer from Kapa‘a High School, finishing at 75 (37-38), four strokes off the pace for the difference.
Following Tokioka, Braeden Robley carded a 77 (36-41) following an even par front nine, Jamie Amimoto posted an 84 (43-41) and Vance Tokita carded a 90 (45-45) for the team win, Tokita tying with Kai Adachi (44-46-90).
Other Raider golfers included Jeremy Felizardo (60-52-112) and Jordan Serrano (50-47-97) during the round which teed off an hour earlier than scheduled due to Kaua‘i High School hosting its prom.
Following Miyata, Kapa‘a’s scoring contributors included Bryden Salvador (37-44-81), Mitchell Alves (41-44-85) and Jordon Guerrero (41-44-85) for the 326 strokes.
Other Warrior golfers included Kawika Wellington (52-42-94), Anthony Aiwohi (53-52-105), Landen Ishida (46-38-84) and Tyler Carvalho (81-79-160).
The Island School Voyagers finished the season with a 386 led by Daniel Miller carding an 84 (39-45) followed by Jacob Dysinger (44-50-94), Michael Miller (47-48-95), Teddy Rose (61-52-113) and Adam Sciafani (65-63-128).
Na‘ea Oda of Kapa‘a High School posted the best round for the girls, ending with a four-over par 76 (40-36) after carding an even-par back nine.
Mariah Paiste of Waimea followed with a 93 (47-46) and Kawena Warren, following a strong showing in the girls 100 -meter hurdles at the Rotary Track Meet, posting a 97 (46-51).
Meleane Moala of Kapa‘a (51-52-103), Park (55-50-105) and Barrier (60-54-114) rounded out the girls’ field.
