LIHU‘E — Three graduates of Kaua‘i High School were named recipients of $1,000 scholarships by the East Kaua‘i Lions Club during a special dinner meeting at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center on Thursday.
LIHU‘E — Three graduates of Kaua‘i High School were named recipients of $1,000 scholarships by the East Kaua‘i Lions Club during a special dinner meeting at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center on Thursday.
Chenelle Mae Andres, Duyanh Pham and Sophia Badua were awarded scholarships after the applications were received by the club’s Scholarship Committee.
Andres and Badua will both he attending the University of Portland with maj0rs in nursing. Pham said he will attend Kaua‘i Community College for two years to study liberal arts before transferring to a four-year college.
In addition to presenting the scholarships, the East Kaua‘i Lions Club also met to celebrate the 86th anniversary of its Charter that was signed in May 1938. Lion Roy Nishida, who served as the EK Lions president from 1982 to 1983. is one of the club’s member who has the longest tenure of service, said past District Governor Lion Kelvin Moniz.
The final agenda item included the installation of the club’s new officers, which included Lion John Ochoco accepting the president’s gavel. Immediate past president is Crystal Caday-Bargayo, and Nishida is the first vice president. Lions DeAnna Starinieri and Angel Acorda are the second and third vice presidents, respectively.
Lion Marcia Kellogg is the club’s secretary and Lion Harvey Kinoshita is the club’s treasurer.
Past District Governor Kelvin Moniz is the membership chair.
Lions Donald Nagamine and Paul Endo were named to one-year directorships. Lionesses Helena Cooney and Colleen Hironaka were named to two-year directorships and Lioness Pam Jardin is the lion tamer, while Lion Robin Dame is the lion tail twister.
