LIHU‘E — Kamakai, a life-sized inflatable, walk-in humpback whale, is ready for the spring break that started when school let up on Friday.
“We have our first big group on Wednesday morning,” said Jean Souza, the on-site manager for the Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery and a program specialist with the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. “We still have space for more group tours.”
The Kamakai experience will be open to the general public with no reservations needed on March 20, 22, 23, 24, 27, 29, 30 and 31.
Viewing times are from 2 to 5 p.m. on March 20, 27, 22, and 29. On March 23, Kamakai will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 24, 30, and 31.
“The group coming on Wednesday is from the Kawaikini New Century Public Charter School,” Souza said. “We can accommodate school groups and classes, kupuna groups, and special needs groups, and others by reservation. These are one-hour blocks from 9 to 11 a.m. The available dates are March 20 through 22, and March 25 through 29.”
The last visit by Kamakai to Kaua‘i was in 2019. The inflatable whale received a large response from people of all ages that were curious about learning more about the humpback whales.
