PUHI — Work on the second phase of the Puhi Road Renovation Project will start on Feb. 12, and continue on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting.
Members of the County of Kaua‘i, including Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, the Engineering Department, and the project’s general contractor Ka‘iwa Construction with Pacific Concrete Works, Jas W. Glover, Pacific Concrete Cutting and Coring, Statewide Safety Systems, Ali‘i Landscaping, and Harry Asato Painting as subcontractors, gathered at the project’s central point on Tuesday to bless the project and its workers.
“The Puhi Road Project excites us because it gets people to work,” Kawakami said. “It gives our young people on Kaua‘i a good wage and improves the quality of life in the area. We are grateful for the community’s continued support to enhance the infrastructor of Puhi Road.”
The second phase of the project will continue the improvements from Kaneka Street to Haleukana Street.
The scope of work includes road repaving, drainage improvements, restriping, updating signage, installing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, and road widening to provide on-street parking in some areas of the project.
The total cost of the project is $7 million.
As the project progresses, there will be traffic lane shifts on Puhi Road from Kaneka Street to Haleukana Street. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes and to expect brief and occasional delays. No road work will take place during the peak traffic times that coincide with school drop-off and pickup.
Additionally, motorists are reminded to exercise caution and drive slowly when commuting through the work area near homes. The speed limit on Puhi Road is 25 mph.
The second phase of the Puhi Road Renovation Project is estimated to be completed by the summer of 2025.
The first phase of the project, which covered the area between the intersection of Puhi Road at Kaumuali‘i Highway to Kaneka Street, was completed in 2018.
