Girls soccer teams representing the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation marked wins on Wednesday during the first round of the Motiv8 Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II state championships that contested at the Waipio Soccer Complex on O‘ahu.
Waimea Menehune wahine downed Radford 4-1 behind a hat trick, or three goals scored, from forward Kendra Knapp and a goal from Kendra Suga in the 29th minute.
Three of Waimea’s goals came in the first half of play, as Knapp’s first goal found the twine in the third minute. Her second and third goals came in the 32nd and 43rd minutes of play.
Sadie Schultz saved Radford from a shutout with her goal in the 61st minute.
On the Kapa‘a Warriors field, the girls from up on the hill shut out the Farrington Governors, 9-0, behind two goals apiece from Shyloh McCan, Carlyn Rapozo-Kamoku and Hi‘ilei Hamberg.
Hamberg struck twice in the first half where the Lady Warriors were sitting on a 4-0 bulge after Hamberg’s foot found the net in the fifth and 11th minutes. Liliwai Keahiolalo scored in the ninth minute and McCann broke the ice in the first minute.
McCann’s second goal came in the second half where Kapa‘a racked up five nets en route to the shutout. She scored in the 68th minute. Carlyn Rapozo-Kamoku opened up the second half in the 41st minute with her goal that was followed by Julia Durocher finding the net in the 49th minute.
McCann’s goal capped a scoring flurry of three goals started when Madison Silva found the net in the 60th minute, followed by Rapozo-Kamoku hitting the goal in the 63rd minute and McCann scoring in the 68th minute.
Kaua‘i High School, capturing the Central Pacific Bank Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls soccer crown, is the top seed at the Motiv8 HHSAA Division II tournament and will face the Leilehua Mules on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Waimea advances to face the Division II No. 2 seed Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i in a Thursday match that starts at 3 p.m. The Kapa‘a girls advance to face the Division III No. 3 seed Kalani Falcons in another 3 p.m. match on Thursday at Waipio Soccer Complex.
