WAIMEA — Waimea High School took two from Kaua‘i High School on Friday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls basketball games at Clem Gomes Gym.
The junior varsity Menehune picked up a 92-8 win, and set a new season-high mark for scoring in the contest that was delayed due to transportation problems in getting the Red Raiders to Waimea.
Menehune Cyani Bagaoisan-Rita was strong inside, netting a game-high 34 points, including being perfect four-for-four on the charity stripe.
Wailana Tanigawa-Christian pitched in 23 points, including a 3-ball launched in the opening frame that ended with a 28-0 Waimea advantage.
Taylor Duran and Jaelyn Maeda-Kalani topped the Kaua‘i effort with three points each and Naveah Eclipse added the sole second half bucket.
On the varsity court, Waimea marked a 57-34 win over the Red Raiders, who held a 12-9 edge at the end of the first quarter, paced by a pair of long distance bombs from guard Cheyley Jacobs.
Waimea roared back in the second stanza with a 17-3 performance behind seven marks from center Ari Acosta, who finished the contest with nine points, all dropping in the first half where Waimea took a 26-15 lead.
High scorer for the Menehune belonged to Hailey Mat,a who finished with 17 points, including a pair of treys, one of which helped light up the boards in the second quarter comeback.
Guard MJ Angala finished with eight points. Stephanie Companero added seven points. Kiaura Rita finished with six marks and Alyssa Gummerus added five.
Red Raiders guard Jazlyn Corpuz finished with a game-high 20 points that included five 3-pointers. Jacobs and center Lailah Kalani each contributed six points in the effort.
KIF girls basketball continues on Monday when Kaua‘i High School travels to Bernice Hundley Gym to face the first round title holder Kapa‘a. The JV games are scheduled to tip off from 5:30 p.m. with the varsity games to follow.
