Two Kaua‘i girls, Ceanne Baliaris, left, and Darcie-Marie Gonzalez, right, who are seniors at the Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama campus, were recognized with player awards during a recent volleyball tournament in Southern California. “Such an awesome recognition here in California for our small island girls,” said Kainani Gonzalez, Darcie-Marie’s mother. “These ladies’ dedication to their team, families, community and representing their entire Kaua‘i mokupuni.”

A fisher from the People’s Fish Market shows shoppers an onaga that’s available on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, during the final Grove Farm Market for 2023 at Puhi Park field. According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources, redfish such as onaga and opakapaka are the color of luck. Those fortunate enough to snag redfish enjoy it steamed Chinese style, served as sashimi, or a combination of both.
