Island School takes four of six KIF paddling races

NAWILIWILI — The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation opened its outrigger canoe paddling season by welcoming varsity girls, boys and mixed teams from the Kawaikini New Century Public Charter Schools on Saturday.

During the first of three long distance races at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor, junior varsity teams paddled for 2 miles while the varsity teams stroked for 4 miles.

On its inaugural KIF run, the Kawaikini varsity girls finished in fifth place with a time of 37 minutes, 24.64 seconds.

The Kawaikini varsity boys stroked to another fifth place on a 32:40.52 run. The varsity Mixed crew scratched.

The Island School Voyagers finished as the day’s big winners by taking first places in four of the six events, including the junior varsity girls, the JV mixed, varsity girls and varsity mixed.

The Voyagers also finished strong by posing challenges in the varsity girls race where the Voyagers stroked to a 28:32.14 finish, just 18 ticks ahead of Waimea at 28:50.23.

Kapa‘a, whose JV team captured the boys race, added its second first finish of the day by taking the varsity boys race on a 25:36.52 run, eight ticks ahead of the Voyagers, who crossed with a 25:44.21 paddle.

The next KIF paddling races will take place on Saturday at Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor. The first race is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
