LIHU‘E —Wendrick Yee, the United Airlines general manager of airport operations at Lihu‘e Airport, said an award presented to the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank (KIFB) was inspired by events of the 9-11 tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001.
LIHU‘E —Wendrick Yee, the United Airlines general manager of airport operations at Lihu‘e Airport, said an award presented to the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank (KIFB) was inspired by events of the 9-11 tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001.
Labelled September of Service, United Airlines presented $5,000 to KIFB on Thursday during a down time so the entire shift of employees could witness the presentation.
“This award is inspired by the tragic events that impacted everyone from the 9-11 events,” Yee said. “I did a lot of reading on the good work being done by the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank. The time to give is now, not during or after a disaster.”
KIFB Executive Director Kelvin Moniz said the contribution is appreciated. The award will be used to help with the food bank’s programs that place emphasis on making sure keiki and kupuna do not go hungry.
He further added that if United Airlines has volunteers that want to do hands-on work, KIFB can arrange to have groups participate in packing the backpacks for the backpack program that sends food home with school children so they will have something to carry them through the weekend.
