HANALEI — A blessing ceremony was held on Thursday for the $6.5 million Hanalei Base Yard and Garage, which was damaged in a historic flood roughly five years ago.
HANALEI — A blessing ceremony was held on Thursday for the $6.5 million Hanalei Base Yard and Garage, which was damaged in a historic flood roughly five years ago.
The reconstructed facility features a new office and garage for the County of Kaua‘i Department of Public Works Roads Division, as well as several other additions not on the initial roster.
Those additions include a garage to house a new rescue boat for the Kaua‘i Fire Department’s Ocean Safety Bureau, office and storage space for the Department of Parks and Recreation, and a garage and office for the Department of Water.
“We would like to express our gratitude to the North Shore community for providing valuable input and engaging in meaningful discussions regarding this project,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami in a statement on Thursday.
“We have faced numerous disasters in the past, and this upgraded facility for our workers and equipment improves the resilience of our community for future disasters.”
The project also added a little something for children in the form of a new playground.
The cost of the playground was paid for with money from Parks and Recreation, as well as the Hanalei Initiative. The playground project was done in collaboration with the Hanalei Watershed Hui and Hanalei-to-Ha‘ena Community Association.
The base yard and garage project was paid for with funds from the state of Hawai‘i and county Department of Water. Unlimited Construction Services Inc. was the project’s contractor. Design consultants include Marc Ventura, AIA, an architecture firm, and Kodani and Associates Engineering.
