NUKOLI‘I — Miami Vice, a 3-month old hound mix, found a new home in Irvine, California, on Wednesday when the Kaua‘i Humane Society and the Kaua‘i Beach Resort partnered for the third Yappy Hour “adoption event.”
“You folks have a lot of dogs and cats,” said Thiago, Miami Vice’s new owner who will bring the dog home when the family completes its Kaua‘i stay.
“I would’ve preferred a boy dog,” said Miami’s new mom. “But this is alright. The name’s gotta go, though. How about Kaua‘i? I like that, but I like ‘Kapa‘a,’ better.”
Miami Vice’s adoption was the goal of setting up Yappy Hour that will take place again on the final Wednesday of July from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the lawn outside the Kaua‘i Beach Resort main building.
“We found a home for a dog in Kapa‘a during the last Yappy Hour,” said a Kaua‘i Humane Society volunteer while noting that for people who are not able to have pets, the KHS tent was also accepting sponsorships for animal trips to shelters outside of Kaua‘i where the animals had an opportunity to be adopted.
Adoption options continue at the Kaua‘i Humane Society, where the Kipu shelter is currently 252 percent over capacity with more than 120 animals in foster homes.
From June 30 through July 2, the Kaua‘i Humane Society, in collaboration with Best Friends Animal Society is hosting free adoptions in observance of National Adoption weekend.
“Right now, we have 301 cats, and 83 dogs,” said Caitlin Fowlkes of the Kaua‘i Humane Society. “We need your help. We can adopt off-island.”
Adoption options continue from July 6-31 with the Empty the Shelters adoption event that is being sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation, and Cathy Bissell.
During this period, all pets will be $25. Additionally, all senior pets, or those 7 years and older, will be free to adopt.
Over capacity at the shelter means that in addition to adoptions that open up room, there is no space to accept animals who got out during the July 4 fireworks, Fowlkes said.
“July 5 is our highest intake day each year,” she said. “We do not have the space. Please take extra care to make sure your pets are safe, and that your pet has a microchip, and the chip is registered to you, correctly.”
The Kaua‘i Humane Society will be closed on July 4.
