‘ELE‘ELE — Waimea Canyon Middle School student Carmila Udarbe recently earned a prestigious Future Farmers of America award, making her the youngest member of the FFA in Hawai‘i.
Udarbe and her mentors, Basilio “Bunga” Fuertes and Roy Miyashiro, will be distributing vegetable seedlings for the first time since she was awarded the FFA award that was inspired by her project of distributing vegetable starters, in the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center on Saturday from 8 a.m.
Vegetable starters available include long beans, or Filipino otong, cherry tomato, Chinese mustard cabbage, Manoa lettuce, sequa, or kabatiti, Japanese cucumber, the Waimanalo/Nitta variety of long eggplant, wing beans, won bok, or Napa cabbage, sweet Harada peppers, round squash, pumpkin or kabocha, and grape tomatoes.
Proceeds from the distribution are used for supplies to ensure future distributions, and if surplus funds are available, set aside for Udarbe’s college education.
