“We have very creative people on the team,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, who got the honor of delivering the first whack on a designated door symbolizing the start of construction for the Kapa‘a Department of Motor Vehicles satellite office in the Kapa‘a Armory.
“I just can’t see myself damaging the people’s assets. I’ll let someone else make the first hole,” said Kawakami.”
The Kapa‘a DMV will provide further convenience for customers, a topic Kawakami spoke about from his first days as the mayor. “Mahalo to our finance team, the DMV staff, and all the partners and stakeholders who assisted us with today’s groundbreaking,” Kawakami said.
“Providing the same over-the-counter transactions as our Lihu‘e DMV, this satellite location, working alongside our Kaua‘i Police Department, will help to reduce commute time and make DMV services more convenient for our East and North Kaua‘i customers.”
Shioi Construction, the same contractor that did the work for the Kapa‘a police substation in the annex, secured the $177,000 project that will have parts of the Kapa‘a Armory renovated to accommodate three DMV service windows facing the road separating the armory from the Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex.
Finance Director Reiko Matsuyama said the DMV will have to add staff to handle the new facility when it is scheduled to open early next year.

Don’t they have a kios machine for DMV somewhere in Kapaa? If so, with the new DMV Satellite Building. Why not move the kios machine to the west side? It would help from have to making appointments to get your vehicle registered and avoid the long line.
