Iris is 74 years old, who lives alone on a fixed monthly income. Iris has no children of her own and depends on friends and neighbors to help with things like baths, shopping, meal prep, house cleaning, etc.
Iris has a hard time walking because of arthritis in her back and legs. She needs a wheelchair to get around in the home. She depends on others to help get her out of her home and into a vehicle when she has a doctor’s appointment.
Iris spends most of her days alone at home listening to country music. She loves listening to Pat Von on Wednesday and Saturdays. Anything to make this holiday season brighter would be very much needed and appreciated.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families and individuals (we don’t use their real names) facing challenges and who would appreciate a little help.
The Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance. Donations are used by Zonta Club members to purchase gift certificates that are in turn distributed to families and individuals through social-service agencies.
Each donation is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrative costs involved, and money goes directly to provide for those in need of Christmas presents and groceries.
If you hold a fundraiser for the Christmas Fund, let us know and we’ll spread the word. Anyone making a donation of $200 or more can have their picture published in TGI.

• David is a single father with one daughter, who with the assistance of a housing program has been able to secure permanent housing. David was previously homeless for the past two years, which caused serious health issues for him.
Now that David is housed, he has been able to take care of his medical issues, however he has not been able to return to work.
David would appreciate a nice gift for his daughter. She enjoys art and crafts, and also learning toys. She would also be very happy with a new jacket.
• Mr. Aloha, 88, and Mrs. Aloha, 67, have been married for 30 years and endured a lot together.
What began with Mr. Aloha caregiving for Mrs. Aloha, who is dealing with COPD, Depression, HBP and unsteady gait, then turned to Mr. Aloha needing care due to his diagnosis of dementia, unsteady gait and vision impairment.
Although they have their own health issues, they continue to take care of each other to ensure they will remain at home together as long as possible. Unfortunately, they had to leave their home they loved in Hanalei, but they safely reside in an apartment that they spend most of their time in. The Aloha’s would benefit from any gift, especially one they can use in their home.
