LIHU‘E — A cold front is forecast to speed its way down the island chain, bringing strong northeast winds, with gusts as high as 47 mph, and brief periods of showers to Kaua‘i on Wednesday evening and Thanksgiving Day.
LIHU‘E — A cold front is forecast to speed its way down the island chain, bringing strong northeast winds, with gusts as high as 47 mph, and brief periods of showers to Kaua‘i on Wednesday evening and Thanksgiving Day.
The outlook came via an advisory issued Tuesday afternoon by the National Weather Service office in Honolulu. As a result, local officials are asking residents to take appropriate steps to ensure a safe holiday period.
“We are urging the public to be vigilant during these potentially hazardous weather events,” said Elton Ushio, administrator of the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency, in a statement.
“If you have any outdoor plans scheduled on Thanksgiving, consider celebrating indoors with appropriate COVID-19 safety considerations. Additionally, we highly recommend storing or securing any loose objects exposed to outdoor winds before the onset of windy conditions.”
At about the same time as the wind event, a powerful low pressure system is forecast to pass north of the island, generating a large north swell that will build into Wednesday evening.
The peak of the north swell could potentially coincide with extreme high tides on Thursday and Friday mornings.
“Homeowners, beachgoers and boaters should prepare for the potential of significant wave run-up along exposed north facing shores,” the National Weather Service said.
