Perla Fernandez Ortal
Perla Fernandez Ortal passed away on July 23, 2022, at KVMH at the age of 73. She was born on Feb. 22, 1949, in Dagupan City, Philippines.
She was preceded in death by parents Benito and Paciencia Fernandez.
She is survived by husband Denny Ortal of Waimea, sons Dean (Krislee) Ortal of Waimea, Devin Ortal of Japan, daughter Pinky (Chad) Yoshimoto of O‘ahu, grandchildren Cole and Mia Yoshimoto, Tiara and Taylee Ortal-Kashima, brother Cesar Fernandez of Kaumakani, sisters Norma Fernandez of Kaumakani, Virginia Fernandez of Kaumakani, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service is Saturday, Sept. 17, at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m., Eulogy at 10:30 a.m., followed by Mass. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Rodolfo ‘Rudy’ Padilla Bercasio
Rodolfo “Rudy” Padilla Bercasio passed away on Aug. 5, 2022, at the age of 62. He was born on Dec. 10, 1959, in Libis Quezon City, Philippines. He worked as ground man maintenance at Princeville Golf, Hyatt Po‘ipu, and Sheraton Kaua‘i.
He was preceded in death by father Cornelio Bercasio.
He is survived by mother Elizabeth Padilla Bercasio, wife Juvie Bercasio, sons Steve (Carla) Bercasio, Jayrald (Elizabeth) Tanicala-Bercasio, Sandy (Jennylyn) Bercasio, daughters Helen (Rolly) Domingo, Julie Bercasio, brothers Joel Bercasio, Reynaldo Bercasio, Eric (Maria) Bercasio, Greg (Maya) Bercasio, Jojo (Eva) Bercasio, grandchildren Bethany, John Kirby, Ellieana, Arianna, Jayelle, AkeenaBrie and Brielle.
A celebration of life is at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary on Friday, Sept. 2, with visitation at 5:30 p.m. followed by service at 7 p.m.

Hideo Robert Watari passed away on Aug. 22, 2022, at KVMH at the age of 91. He was born on April 14, 1931, in Kilauea. He was a veteran of U.S. Army and a taro farmer.
He was preceded in death by father Yohichiro Watari, mother Eleanor Watari, sisters Barbara Masada, Alice Ong and grandson Thomas Kaina Hideo Hashimoto.
He is survived by wife Elaine Watari of Hanalei, sons Kenneth Watari of Hanalei, Russell Watari (Karen) of Kalihiwai, Robert Watari (Lillian) of Hanalei, daughter Wanda Hashimoto of Hanalei, grandchild Lily Kailana Watari, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service is at Garden Island Mortuary on Sunday, Sept. 11, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. and a celebration of life to follow. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Frank Ruiz, Jr.
Frank Ruiz, Jr. passed away on Aug. 10, 2022, at Waimea Care Center, at the age of 91. He was born on Dec. 10, 1930, in Waimea, Hawai‘i. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force and a power plant operator.
He was preceded in death by wife Lillian Ruiz.
He is survived by sons Richard (Tiffany) Ruiz of Kekaha. James (Melanie) Ruiz of Kekaha, three grandchildren, brother Guy (Priscilla) Ruiz of Kekaha, sisters Lucy Kanoa of Kekaha, Marie Ruiz of Kekaha, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service is Saturday, Sept. 3, at The Garden Island Mortuary, with visitation 9 to 11 a.m. and celebration of life at 11 a.m.

Paul Vincent Canales, 59, of Puhi, passed away on Aug. 17, 2022, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. He was born on Jan. 23, 1963, in Lihu‘e.
He was preceded in death by father Antonio T. Canales, mother Consalacion M. Canales, brothers Mark S. Canales and Daniel M. Canales.

Florencio Castro, 79, of Kapa‘a, passed away on Aug. 20, 2022, at Samuel Mahelona Hospital in Kapa‘a. He was born in Sta. Maria Ilocus Sur Philippines. He worked on Kaua‘i as a landscaper for Kaua‘i Resort.
He was preceded in death by parents Fidel and Dionicia Castro.
He is survived by wife Corazon Castro, son Julius (Angelin) Castro and grandchildren Julianne, Jericho, and Julius Jr.
A service is at St. Catherine’s Church, in Kapa‘a, on Saturday, Sept. 17. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. and a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kealia Cemetery.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Sophie B. Fujinaga
Sophie B. Fujinaga, 89, passed away on Aug. 15, 2022, at KVMH. She was born on May 10, 1933, in Anahola. She was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by husband Kenneth Fujinaga, siblings Kenneth Lai, Beatrice Lum, Koon Chow Lai, and Richard Lai.
She is survived by son Kent Fujinaga, daughters Susan (Rankin) Pang, Lani (Mark) Pedronan, grandchildren Ashley (Jerren) Hashimoto, Mikki Pedronan, Korey Pang, Lauren Pang, Jaycee Pang, great-grandchildren Hazel Hashimoto and Sienna Hashimoto.
A service will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, at Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe, O‘ahu beginning at 10 a.m. The family requests no koden (monetary gifts) and suggests donating to a charity of your choice.
