LIHU‘E — In the weeks leading up to Teacher Appreciation Day, Tuesday, May 3, the U.S. Army Recruiting Station Kaua‘i is partnering with several local organizations to honor and celebrate teachers.
The Kaua’i U.S. Army Recruiting Station is teaming up with Kumu’s Cupboard, a local nonprofit organization that provides free school supplies to educators on Kaua’i.
The recruiting station is collecting donations of school supplies at the Pau Hana Market every Monday, including today, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Kukui Grove Center through May 2.
On May 3, the recruiting station will present Kumu’s Cupboard with all of the donated school supplies, so they may then be made available for educators across the island.
Additionally, the JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) cadets from both Kapa‘a and Waimea High schools will conduct a free car wash for teachers at KGC, in the Macy’s parking lot, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Sunday, May 1.
Finally, the U.S. Army Recruiting Station Kaua‘i is accepting nominations from high school students at Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i High and Waimea for outstanding teachers.
On May 3, U.S. Army recruiters will then present the top teacher from each school with a certificate and a token of appreciation for their hard work and selflessness as educators.
Recently, the U.S. Army raised its enlistment bonus to $50,000 for qualified individuals who sign on for a six-year, active-duty assignment.
For select occupations which are in immediate need of filling, or which are difficult to fill due to the specific qualifications required, the Army is offering career-based incentives that range from $1,000 up to $40,000.
Aside from the career-based bonuses, there are “quick ship” bonuses for those who are prepared to head to basic combat training within 90 days. These incentives range from $2,000 to $9,000. As part of the Army Civilian Acquired Skills Program, foreign-language skills can be worth up to $40,000 for certain career paths.
