Flash flood warnings for Kauai, winter weather on Big Island

HONOLULU — The National Weather Service warned Friday of flash floods and the possibility of landslides on Kauai as the Big Island’s summits were issued a winter weather advisory.

On Kauai, Hanalei River flooding has closed the only bridge connecting a remote part of the island to more populated towns on the north shore.

“At 6:26 a.m., the Hanalei River gauge reported a rapid rise in water level, even though rainfall upstream has decreased, and Kauai Emergency Management reports that Kuhio Highway has been closed at the Hanalei River,” a weather service warning said.

Princeville, Hanalei and the Na Pali State Park, among other towns, could all experience heavy flooding. Local authorities said more roads could be closed and there is a possibly of landslides, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

The same system brought heavy rain and flood advisories to Oahu Thursday night.

Meanwhile, the peaks of the Big Island are expecting more snow.

Up to 2 inches is possible and there is a chance of freezing rain, weather officials said.

The holiday forecast calls for rain and the possibility of a rare island thunderstorm through Saturday morning.
