NAWILIWILI — After a multi-faceted five-day search, on Thursday, a Navy Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircrew found the missing vessel that departed Nawiliwili Harbor last week, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Hawai‘i Pacific District.
Philip Grenz, 67, who was headed toward Haleiwa, O‘ahu, departed Kaua‘i on Thursday, Sept. 2.
At 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, Sector Honolulu watchstanders received a report of the missing mariner who departed Nawiliwili Harbor and had not arrived at his next port of call in Haleiwa. They then issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched Coast Guard rescue crews.
Grenz was found 350 miles southwest of O‘ahu waving his hands in the air aboard his 42-foot sailing vessel “Epic.” An Air Station Barbers Point C-130 Hercules aircrew dropped a rescue kit containing food, water and radio.
Multiple Coast Guard air and surface crews are searching with assistance from the Navy, Air Force, Civil Air Patrol, and local agencies from O‘ahu and Kaua‘i, including the Kaua‘i Fire Department’s Ocean Safety Bureau.
