County Driver Licensing division has extended hours for some customers
LIHU‘E — The county Department of Finance Driver Licensing division has extended hours now through Friday, July 16, to allow eligible customers to renew their driver’s licenses, learner’s permits and state identification cards that expired on or after March 16, 2020.
Only customers meeting these criteria may come to the division for service between 4 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. on the effective dates. No appointments are necessary. Customers will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure service, it is recommended to get in line early.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 emergency response, Gov. David Ige’s 21st proclamation has extended the validity of all driver’s licenses, learner’s permits and state identification cards for 60 days beyond their expiration dates.
Those credentials with expiration dates between March 16, 2020, and June 8, 2021 have had expiration dates extended until Aug. 6. It is anticipated that this will be the last extension granted via emergency proclamations, and after Aug. 6 late penalties will be enforced.
“Our hope is that the extended hours will offer the extra boost needed to achieve our goal of eliminating any pandemic-caused backlog and help to avoid incurring late penalties,” said Reiko Matsuyama, finance director.
For appointments during regular business hours, visit kauai.gov/DMV. Normal hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. weekdays except for county holidays. Kupuna hour is available for those 65 years or older, from 8 to 8:45 a.m. No appointments are necessary for kupuna hour.
Extended service hours apply only to eligible customers in the Finance Department’s Driver Licensing division.
Masks are required for entry, and social-distancing guidelines continue to be enforced.
