LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Community College is starting the distribution of the federal Cares Student Emergency Aid, according to an announcement this week from Dr. Joseph Daisy, KCC chancellor.
“We’re calling it ‘Your Share of CARES’ (and) we will be sending out an email to eligible students this afternoon that will explain how they can tap into this new source of financial assistance,” Daisy said in the May 5 announcement.
Out of the $31 million set aside for Hawai‘i education institutions, KCC will receive $535,684 for their school and students.
Last month, U.S. Sen. Mazie K. Hirono announced the availability of U.S. Department of Education higher-education emergency-relief funds — including $15 million to provide direct emergency cash grants to students to cover critical expenses related to cost of attendance, like housing, food, health care, child care and other education-related expenses.
Congress approved this funding to provide institutions with flexible resources to support students. Announcements about additional institutional-level funding are expected from the U.S. DOE in the coming weeks.
“The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the lives of thousands of students in Hawai‘i and millions more across the country,” said Hirono. “This funding will provide urgently-needed support to students and ease some of the financial burden they are experiencing. I will continue to advocate for additional relief for students in the weeks and months ahead.”
University of Hawaii at Manoa is expected to receive over $11 million; University of Hawaii at Hilo nearly $3 million; $2,994,725, Brigham Young University Hawai‘i $2,306,881; Leeward Community College $2,067,889; Kapi‘olani Community College $2,022,941; Hawai‘i Pacific University $1,879,700; Chaminade University $1,482,800; University of Hawai‘i-West O‘ahu $1,395,000; University of Hawai‘i Maui College $1,187,907; Hawai‘i Community College $1,147,226; Honolulu Community College $1,107,387; Windward Community College $551,098; Paul Mitchell (Honolulu) $237,042; Hawai‘i Institute of Hair Design $163,841; Pacific Rim Christian University $156,569; IBS School of Cosmetology and Massage Maui campus $67,672; Institute of Clinical Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine $14,549; and Mauna Loa Helicopters $6,110.
