KALAHEO — The time is just right for a soup dinner, said Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin, Sunday during the first Souper Sunday where more than 200 bowls of soup with accompanying side of rice, bread and Kaua‘i Kookie were distributed to drive-thru customers in compliance with the social distancing rules.
“This is the right time of the day,” Pavao Jardin said. “It’s just the right time for a soup dinner.”
Hula Halau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina‘ala teamed with Kaua‘i Kookie to distribute the free “hearty Chicken Soup” to diners driving through the pick up line, getting support from the Kekaha Agriculture Association.
“Ann Hashisaka of Kaua‘i Kookie dances with us,” Pavao Jardin said. “She wanted to do this. This is like the old days when everyone took care of everyone. We’re doing this again, next week Sunday, but this time we’re in Hanapepe at the Kaua‘i Kookie drive thru because Kaua‘i Kookie’s home is in Hanapepe.”
The week following, the soup distribution returns to Kalaheo, the home site of the halau.
Distribution is at 4 to 5 p.m., or while supplies last, and people need to drive up.
“We’d like to do this for as long as we can during the COVID crisis,” Pavao Jardin said. “We keep on giving, and we’ll be blessed — aloha, aloha, aloha.”
