The diocese of Acerra announced Francis’ May 24 visit on Saturday. It said his trip to the so-called “Land of Fires” would be a source of joy and hope for the region’s families, and especially their cancer-stricken children.
Italy’s National Institutes of Health said in a 2016 report to parliament that residents of the area near Naples suffered higher-than-normal incidents of death and cancer due to exposure to contaminants from illegal dumps and the burning of urban and hazardous waste.
Residents have long complained about adverse health effects stemming from the dumping, which has poisoned the underground wells that irrigate the farmland that provides vegetables for much of central and southern Italy. The fires and dumping are blamed on the local Camorra mob, which controls the area.
The bishop of Acerra, Antonio Di Donna, said he hoped Francis’ visit would bring a “strong appeal to public institutions so that the truth finally comes out about our land.”
In his 2015 environmental encyclical, “Praised Be,” Francis called for a cultural revolution to correct what he said was a “structurally perverse” economic system in which the rich exploited the poor, turning Earth into an “immense pile of filth.”
Francis has also repeatedly condemned Italian mafiosi, saying they are excommunicated and demanding they change their ways.

While CAPITALISM is a proponent of PROFITEERING, massive CORPORATIONS (like the SEED COMPANIES on the Westside) using massive near daily doses of POISON to God given plants whose genetically Toxic seeds are sold worldwide serving no purpose for Kauai except “HIT and RUN” agricultural profiteering on the back of a former safe but now declining environment for all of us.
All this while a US nationwide organization called ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP ( EWG.org) claims there are many toxic and cancer causing chemicals in our drinking water here on Kauai especially in the Lihue Kapaa Wailua areas as well as most of the rest of the island. (You can ask them by providing your ZIP CODE).
Are these current water quality tests showing cancer causing chemicals in the drinking water, chemicals coming from the old plantation days of agriculture but whose toxic chemicals still plague our water ways and drinking water…are there no filters that can take the poisons out of our water. At the very least the County and our Water DEPT should challenge the EWG.org water quality testing. EWG has offices in San Francisco and New York.
The Pope is visiting agricultural areas of ITALY to bring attention to poisons being dumped by the MAFIA on Italy’s farm lands…is it really any different here?
Mafia or Monsanto (and their name changing replacement seed companies) dumping by Ag poison application here on Kauai , poisoning our land, water, and air…and our selves and our families, even causing birth defects to children before they are born…! ! !
Well while the seed companies are profiteering off of Kauai in trade for a few farm job incomes, and a few executive Incomes, they almost daily poison our homeland, and the heavy rains carry the poisons to our ocean reefs and waters.
Perhaps the Pope will come here to enlighten the world about the “BAD SEED” seed companies recklessly harming our environment and poisoning our people just as the “BAD SEED” Mafia is doing in Italy…to their farmlands.
…and if the Pope cannot find time to do this, maybe our Mayor and Council can find the time to take care of our Environment and their citizens…all of us…!
The Pope May be the head of the worldwide Catholic Church, but our Mayor and Council are the heads of all of us.
With the winds that cross the island every day, and the rains that saturate the land and swell our rivers to overflowing, the agricultural poisons are impacting every one of us in a cancerous horrific way.
Like the Pope said…”This has got to Stop”.
