Myrna Mae K. Costales
Myrna Mae K. Costales, of Kekaha, passed away on Sept. 7, 2019, at Straub Medical Center in Honolulu, at the age of 71.
She was a bank manager for Bank of Hawaii’s Waimea Branch.
She was preceded in death by parents Raymond M. Judd Jr. and Carinthia H. Kahalewai Judd of Honolulu, brother William Judd, sisters-in-law Carol Judd and Gail Judd of Honolulu, and grandson Shayden Csigi of Maui.
She is survived by husband Martin E. Costales, brothers Raymond (Stella) Judd III and Carl Judd, sister Elizabeth (Willy) Funn, sons Paul (Edie) Cosner, Joseph (Teresa) Cosner and Edwin Costales, daughters Cari Ann (Wojo) Csigi and Patricia (Tim) Drury, 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in Waimea, with visitation from 8 to 10 a.m. with Mass to follow.
Inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Samuel Contrades
Samuel Contrades, of Kapahi, passed away on Sept. 3, 2019, at the age of 52, at Wilcox Medical Center.
Born on Kauai on Sept. 26, 1966, he was the owner of Samuel Contrades Construction.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Isami and Minnie Morita and John Jr. and Emily Contrades.
He is survived by Furball, parents John III and Roberta Contrades, sister Roberta (James) Dandar, brothers John (Crystal) Contrades IV, Ronald (Tammy) Contrades, Robert (Vanessa) Contrades and Patrick (Jocelyn) Contrades, and numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Oct. 12, at St. Catherine Church in Kapaa, with visitation at 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow at Keapana Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at St. Catherine’s Coyle Hall.
The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.

John Masato Uyeno
John Masato Uyeno passed away at his home on Sept. 6, 2019.
He was the former publisher of The Garden Island newspaper, where he worked for 52 years.
A civic-minded gentleman, Uyeno was an active participant in the Boys Scouts of America and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award in 1964 for many years of service to Scouting.
He served over 20 years as a trustee and board member of Wilcox Memorial Hospital and Wilcox Memorial Hospital Foundation.
He also served as president of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce in 1975.
An active member of the East Kauai Lions Club, Uyeno had the honor of being elected district governor for District 50-Hawaii Lions Club International from 1987 to 1988.
He was preceded in death by parents Masaru and Kay Uyeno, brothers Kay and Harold Uyeno, daughter Cheryl Leiko Taylor, and most recently by his wife, Diane Nobuko Uyeno.
He is survived by brother Tokio (Helen) Uyeno, nephew Alden Uyeno, and extended family Rona and Calvin Sakai and Roberta and Sidney Yanagawa.
Funeral services will be held at Lihue Christian Church on Saturday, Oct. 12, with visitation at 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m.
Marie Sueko Rosa
Marie Sueko Rosa, 78, of Hanamaulu, passed away at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital on Sept. 19, 2019. She was born in Lihue on June 2, 1941, and retired as a cashier with Hanamaulu Store and a waitress at various locations.
She was preceded in death by parents Heikichi and Marie Rodrigues Wada, sisters Eleanor (Alfred) Pundyke, Domenica and Frances (Alec) Smith, brothers Joseph Castro Jr., William (Beatrice) Victorino Jr., and Moses, Albert and Joseph (Bella) Victorino, hanai parents William (Emily) Victorino Sr., amd numerous relatives of the Wada, Fukushima and Tanigawa families.
She is survived by husband of 57 years Howard Rosa, daughter Kathleen Rosa, brother Louis (Margaret) Victorino, sisters, Thelma Lopes and Alma Soares, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at St. Catherine Church, with visitation from 8 a.m., rosary at 9 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m.

Lionel Eric Ku‘uipo Gonsalves
Lionel Eric Ku‘uipo Gonsalves, 49, of Lihue, passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on Aug. 30, 2019. He was born on Nov. 6, 1969, in Waimea. He was employed by the state of Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, as Kauai Branch chief.
He was preceded in death by father Leon Gonsalves Sr., maternal grandparents Albert and Clara Jardin, paternal grandparents William and Agnes Gonsalves, uncles Peter Kali Sr. and Sandy Cantotay, and cousin, Peter “P.K.” Kali Jr.
He is survived by wife Cesili Gonsalves, son Bryson Gonsalves, granddaughter Ayva Marie Gonsalves, grandson Ayden Brock Gonsalves, mother of his grandchildren Kaira Kupihea, mother Judy Gonsalves, brothers Leon (Patricia) Gonsalves, Jr., Lance (Tobey) Gonsalves and Loran (Linette Rita) Gonsalves, mothers and fathers in-law Kaipo and Wendy Waiwaiole and Leonard and Yolanda Esona Sr., sisters-in-law Pua (Brian) Fernandez, Moana Waiwaiole, Jennie (Chad) Vega, Nicole (Kenneth) Carvalho, Shannelly Esona and Kabbie (Aaron) Koshan, brother-in-law Leonard Esona Jr., aunts Alberta Kali, Annette Cremer and Jeanette Cantotay, uncle Sam (Francine) Gonsalves, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and his Kalapaki surf crew.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Nawiliwili Beach Park, Kalapaki Bay, with visitation at 8 a.m., services at 9 a.m., paddle out in the bay at 10 a.m., and a luncheon to follow.

Ernesto “Erning” Itabac Carbonel, of Koloa, passed away on Sept. 14, 2019, at Wilcox Medical Center at the age of 81. Born in Salomague, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was retired from the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa.
He was preceded in death by parents Saturnino Q. Carbonel and Estefania I. Carbonel, brothers Bartolome Carbonel, Julio Carbonel, Alfredo Carbonel, Sr., Emilio Carbonel and Eugenio Carbonel, sisters Rosita Rivad, Fortunata Carbonel and Herminia Carbonel, brothers-in-law Teofilo Serrano Sr. and Petronilo Rivad, and sisters-in-law Rufina Carbonel, Dolores A. Carbonel, Aida Carbonel and Eugenia Carbonel.
He is survived by wife Dolores Tugade Carbonel, sons Ernest “Pali” (Lauri) Carbonel and Jess (Jodee) Carbonel, daughter Ralna (Jack) Burbank, grandchildren Bryson Carbonel, Trevor Carbonel, Jonah Carbonel, Jacob Burbank, Jaden Carbonel, Ryder Burbank and Jewel Carbonel, brothers Daniel (Vicenta) Carbonel and Rudolfo (Marites) Carbonel, sisters Flora Serrano and Adelina (Luis) Rivad, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Oct. 19, at St. Raphael Church in Koloa, with visitation from 8 a.m. and Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Raphael Cemetery.

Teodoro O. ‘Teddy’ ‘Boy’ ‘Godo’ Gorospe Jr.
Teodoro O. “Teddy” “Boy” “Godo” Gorospe Jr. was born on May 15, 1952 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
He passed away on July 8, 2019, at the age of 67, at Queen’s Hospital on Oahu, with his loving wife Dee Dee and sister Nadeen by his side.
He was preceded in death by father Teodoro O. Gorospe Sr., sister Rose Marie Gorospe, uncle James Alviar, grandma Josephine “Tinang” Villanueva and brother-in-law Duane Aliveado.
He was a cook at the Coco Palms and Sea Shell Restaurant, and retired from Akita Enterprises Ltd. where he was a school bus driver.

Services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at St. Catherine Church, with visitation from 8 to 9:55 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Catherine Coyle Hall behind the church.
A scattering of ashes will be held at a later date.

George Keoki Taniguchi
George Keoki Taniguchi passed away on Sept. 4, 2019, at the age of 59. He was born on Nov. 12, 1959, in Lihue, and was a custodian at Waimea Canyon Middle School.
He is survived by daughter Eloise Kanoho Taniguchi of Waimea, parents Eddie Taniguchi Jr. and Eloise Taniguchi of Pakala, brothers Roger (Lisa Taniguchi) of Makaweli, Eddie (Krissy) Taniguchi III of Hanamaulu and Manuel Taniguchi of Lihue, sister Jasmine (Charlie) Kahepu‘u of Kekaha, and by numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Salt Pond Beach Park big pavilion at 10 a.m.

Mercedes “Mercy” Efhan, 82, of Kapaa, passed away at home on Sept. 6, 2019. She was born on Oahu on Jan. 6, 1937, and was a dedicated homemaker.
She was preceded in death by husband Sancho Efhan, granddaughter Shawnte Keala Efhan Jaquias, great-grandson Kamahao Henderson, parents Simeona and Gregorio Datanagan, and siblings Larry Datanagan and Connie Villaro.
She is survived by daughters Bernie (Harlan) Nakae of Kapaa, Suzie Efhan of Lihue, Sherrie Efhan of Kapaa, Val Yadao of Hanamaulu and Lulu (Wilbert) Cummings of Puhi, sons Teo Efhan of Anahola and Aaron (Janis) Efhan of Lihue, 23 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, siblings Vic Datanagan of Daly City, California and Lourdes Corpuz of Ewa Beach, Oahu, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery pavilion at 10 a.m, with inurnment to follow.

Suzanne Deppe (Allen), 68, of Anahola passed away at home on Sept. 12, 2019. She was born in Chicago on Nov. 25, 1950.
She was preceded in death by husband Ardel H. Deppe, and parents Edward Mauter and Julia Smith.
She is survived by brother Chuck Mauter, daughter Julie (Destry) Jensen, grandsons Travis (Kanani) Caberto and Trevor Fitch, granddaughters Shannon Fitch and Savannah Fitch, and great-grandchildren Kainoa, Kainalu and Teiana.

Honorato Dafun Dela Cruz of Kekaha passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Sept. 30, 2019, at the age of 83
He was born in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, on Sept. 7, 1936. He retired from Kekaha Sugar Company as a lab analyst.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, parents Esteban and Marina Dela Cruz, sisters Consolacion Tabije, Paula Dela Cruz and Vergie Christobal, and brother Mateo Dela Cruz.
He is survived by wife Melie Pacol Dela Cruz, daughter Melonor (Tadashi) Dela Cruz-Muratake, grandsons Avery Dela Cruz and Issaiah Dela Cruz-Muratake, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, Oct. 18, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary in Koloa, with visitation at 9:30 a.m. and services at 10 a.m.
