Expect a wet weekend; hurricanes moving

Island weather will trend wetter through the weekend, with diminishing trade winds and increased moisture also making it feel quite muggy by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The chances for a few locally heavy showers will increase as well, as a low pressure system in the upper atmosphere passes near the islands. Light winds may continue for most of next week.

A record high temperature of 89 degrees was set in Lihue on Thursday, surpassing the previous record of 88 set in 2017. The record continues a daily streak of record highs and ties since the start of September.

Tropical Storm Kiko, meanwhile, was 1,875 miles east-southeast of Lihue late Friday morning. It was moving northwest at 6 mph with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. The National Hurricane Center reported Kiko is unlikely to change in strength this weekend as it moves closer to the Central Pacific.
