KAPAA — The Hanapepe Colts took both ends of its meeting against the Kapaa Eagles Saturday when the Kauai Pop Warner Football League hosted the third week of its fall season at the Bryan Baptiste Memorial Sports Park stadium with a five-game schedule on its calendar.
Trailing 14-0 in the fourth quarter of the Mitey Mites division game, Alakai Mundon kept the Eagles from being shut out when the Mitey Mite broke out for an 81-yard scamper to the end zone for the 14-6 final.
Camden Barba was on the receiving end of a 39-yard scoring pass in the opening quarter to push the Colts into the scorebooks, Kanoa Naumu doing the point-after kick for the 8-0 go-ahead.
In the final quarter, Kepa Pablo pulled in a 15-yard aerial in the end zone to set up the Colts’ 14-0 margin.
During the PeeWee contest that closed the day, Eagles’ Braydon Bermoy prevented the shutout in the final period with an 11-yard push to paydirt that came in the face of a 31-0 Colt lead.
Bermoy’s score did not end the contest, however, as Colts’ Keona Tam, scoring a three-yard run in the second quarter, found open ground for a 49-yard breakout with Shayden Dela Cruz icing the touchdown with a point-after run for the 38-6 final.
Dela Cruz was the PeeWee Colts’ workhorse in the victory, pulling in a 49-yard pass for score, and adding three PAT kicks and a PAT rush.
No scores were available for the Lihue and Kekaha matchups in the Mitey Mite and PeeWee age groups. The fifth game was a developmental Flag event.
Flag football opens the Saturday schedule of five games hosted by the Kekaha Titans at the Hanapepe Stadium starting at 8:30 a.m.
Following Flag, the Kekaha Titans will host the Kapaa Eagles to matches in the Mitey Mite and PeeWee division starting at 10:30 a.m.
The afternoon series will have Koloa hosting Lihue in both the Mitey Mite and PeeWee divisions starting at 1:30 p.m.
Good job Hanapepe.
