Development accepting applications

KOLOA — Rental applications are being accepted for Koa‘e Makana, an affordable workforce housing development in Koloa.

“As the need for housing continues to rise on Kauai, I encourage all applicants to take advantage of this opportunity to apply for affordable workforce housing,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami. “The first units are scheduled to be available in September, so now is the time to apply.”

Preference will be given to applicants in the following order:

1. Employees of businesses within the Koloa tax zone;

2. Residents of Kauai;

3. Residents of the state of Hawaii.

Applicants who have U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Housing Choice Voucher Program vouchers are welcome to apply.

Applicants should direct any inquiries about Koa’e Makana to Mark Development by emailing or calling 735-9099, ext. 1.

Rent ranges from $843 to $1,012 for one-bedroom units, $1,012 to $1,215 for two-bedroom units, and $1,170 to $1,404 for three-bedroom units.

For households earning at or below 30 percent area median income, rent is based upon approximately 30 percent of the household’s total adjusted annual income.

Income limits and rents are subject to change.

All completed and qualified applications received by Friday, June 14 will be entered into a lottery to determine initial placement, which will be held on Monday, June 24.

Koa‘e Makana is being developed by Mark Development in partnership with the county.

Koa‘e Makana will be 133 units to serve households with incomes at or below 30 percent, 50 percent, and 60 percent of the median income limits established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
