KILAUEA — The finale of the “Catch A Wave Business Competition” begins 4 p.m. Saturday at the Anaina Hou Porter Pavilion in Kilauea.
It’s like the Shark Tank TV show, but Kauai-style, say organizers with The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay. The event will allow local small business owners to present plans in front of a panel of judges as well as an audience of investors and Kauai locals. The eight finalists will be competing for prizes.
First place receives $7,500 to spend on their business, a free one-year lease at the new Kilauea Lighthouse Shopping Village and mentoring from business leaders.
Last year, a panel of expert judges selected Hoa Kai as the winner of the entrepreneurial competition.
The family-operated business was founded by Kapaa High graduate Kelly Kakalia and her husband, Kauai High graduate Andrew, in 2016. They created lightweight designer towels, handmade with 100 percent cotton designed to dry easily. Hoa Kai received $5,000 in grants,.
